• Local Java documentation:
  1. Download docs from Oracle. You will have to accept the license agreement.
  2. Unzip docs into Java home directory. The directory should be among others: bin, jre, lib, etc. The ide should find it automatically. You might need admin privileges.
• Install JavaFX Scene Builder 2.0:
  1. Download Builder from Oracle. You will have to accept the license agreement.
  2. Install the directory in a known, convenient location. For example, "/home/bob/installs/oracle/JavaFXSceneBuilder2.0/". I suggested you don't use the Downloads directory.
  3. Open netbeans
  4. Tools menu
  5. Options item
  6. Java option
  7. JavaFX tab
  8. Set the "Scene Builder Home" to the location of the unzipped directory.
  9. Check "Save all Modified Files Before Running Scene Builder".
  10. Click "OK" button.
• Use JavaFX Scene Builder:
  1. If required, create a new project:
     1. Open Netbeans
     2. File menu
     3. "New Project" item
     4. Categories: JavaFX
     5. Projects: JavaFX FXML Application
     6. Next button
     7. Project Name: {your project name}
     8. Finish Button
  2. Open "Projects" view.
  3. Navigate to the .fxml file
  4. Double click the .fxml file.
     A new JavaFX Scene Builder editor will open. Leave it open. Remember to save your .fxml before running the app. Netbeans will know to compile before running.
     When working on the graphics, try Preview for a quick turnaround.
  5. To use a Cascading Style Sheet (CSS):
     1. In Netbeans: Projects window, navigate to the style sheet ( Other Sources, src/main/resources/styles, double click the .css file ) or create one ( Other Sources, src/main/resources/styles, right click styles, new, Other, Categories: Other, File Types: Cascading Style Sheet, Next, File Name: {your_file_name}, Finish ).
     2. In JavaFX Scene Builder: Preview, Scene Style Sheet, Add a Style Sheet, navigate to the .css file under {your_project}/src/main/resources/styles, select it, Open button
     3. The style sheet should have been applied.
     4. In Netbeans: edit the style sheet. Be sure to use Cntl-space for completion suggestions. Use the -fx-* styles. Use Source, Format for automatic formatting. Save the changes.
     5. In JavaFX Scene Builder: The changes should have automatically appeared. Try Preview, Show Preview in Window.
     6. In Netbeans: Sometimes a compile is required to get the Scene Builder changes to take effect.
